Breast Augmentation in Oklahoma City: Your Questions, Answered

Breast augmentation is our flagship procedure. Here is what the surgery actually involves, how recovery unfolds, and what you should know before your consultation in Oklahoma City.

By the surgical team of Oklahoma Surgical Arts ·

What breast augmentation actually is

Breast augmentation adds size and shape to the breasts with implants. An implant is a soft shell filled with salt water or silicone gel. The implant sits behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. You and your surgeon choose the size and placement together at your visit — sized to your frame, decided with you.

Implants do not last a lifetime. Plan on more surgery someday. That is not a failure of the procedure. It is the nature of any implanted device. A straightforward conversation about longevity is part of every consultation we hold.

This procedure is performed by the surgeons of the Tulsa Surgical Arts program, with two operating rooms here in Oklahoma City. Surgery can happen in OKC or Tulsa — your choice of city. Consultations are available virtual or in person.

What happens in the operating room

You receive anesthesia — medicine that makes you sleep. The surgeon makes a short incision, most often in the fold under the breast. A pocket is created behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. The implant is placed into that pocket and checked for position. The incision is closed in layers with dissolving stitches.

Surgery takes about an hour. You go home the same day. A responsible adult drives you home and stays with you for the first twenty-four hours. After anesthesia you may not drive yourself, take a rideshare alone, or leave unaccompanied. Your driver checks in with you, stays reachable by phone, and receives your discharge instructions in person.

Recovery, honestly

The first few days bring chest tightness and soreness — patients describe it as feeling like a hard workout. Walk the same day. Sleep on your back. By one week, most people with desk jobs return to work. No lifting beyond the limit your surgeon sets during that stretch.

By two weeks the soreness fades. Light lower-body exercise is usually fine. At six weeks, full exercise resumes, including chest workouts. Implants soften and settle over months. The final shape is not the shape you see on day one.

In any emergency — chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, sudden confusion, or a leg that swells or hurts more than the other — call 911 first. For concerns that are not emergencies, call us at 405-751-0042, day or night.

The honest risk list

Every surgery has risks. A firm scar shell can form around the implant — called capsular contracture — which can change the shape and cause discomfort. Surgery can correct it. An implant can leak or break over time; broken implants are replaced or removed. Nipple sensation can change. Breastfeeding may be affected for some women.

A very rare cancer of the scar tissue around some implants has been reported. Some patients report body-wide symptoms they link to implants. Removing implants is always an option. Other risks include bleeding, infection, visible scars, numb skin near the incisions, blood clots, anesthesia complications, uneven results, and the possible need for another surgery to fix a problem or improve the result.

We go over every one of these risks with you in person before you decide anything. A consult is a conversation, not a commitment.

Questions

Asked in real consults.

How long does breast augmentation surgery take?
About an hour. You go home the same day. A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you for the first twenty-four hours after anesthesia. Most desk-job patients return to work within a week.
Do breast implants last forever?
No. Implants do not last a lifetime. Plan on additional surgery someday — whether for a leak, a change in preference, or capsular contracture. Your surgeon will discuss implant longevity at your consultation.
Where is the incision placed?
Most often in the fold under the breast. The incision is short and closed in layers with dissolving stitches. Every cut leaves a scar; most fade over a year, though some stay raised or wide. Scar placement is discussed at your visit.
Can I have surgery in Oklahoma City or Tulsa?
Yes. The program operates in both cities. Your consultation can be virtual or in person, and your records follow you between locations. Two operating rooms are available here in Oklahoma City.
