Patients say “plastic surgery” for almost any operation that changes how they look, and that is how the phrase is used here. In medicine the two words name two related specialties. Plastic surgery covers reconstruction — repair after cancer, injury, burns or birth differences — and cosmetic operations; its surgeons complete a plastic surgery residency and may be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Cosmetic surgery is surgery of appearance only, on healthy patients, by choice; cosmetic surgeons come to it from different surgical residencies and then train specifically in cosmetic procedures, for example through a one-year cosmetic surgery fellowship, and may be certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
Both kinds of surgeon perform facelifts, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, tummy tucks and liposuction. What decides your result is not the word on the door: it is the surgeon’s training in the operation you want, how many of them they perform, the results you can examine on patients like you, the certifying board named in full, and the facility’s accreditation.
